Place de Londres
The kids are 12 to 14 years old. They choose their own clothes, hair-styles, are heavily into rock, new wave, ska and punk fashion. They have parties. During one of these, director Violaine De Villers and photographer Daniel Locus invite them to be video-ed. The succession of singular pictures is video-taped live without rehearsal. Obviously there are no re-takes. The most difficult part is to come face to face with the lens alone, without the support of the group. Sometimes provocative, sometimes arrogant, they are in search of their identity. They are already touched by teenage narcissism. What is more these parties are an opportunity to check how their image matches up to that of their friends, to learn to charm and to be attractive. This evening they have taken particular trouble over their appearance, a ritual of any party. While Daniel Locus’ portraits are caught in still frame, Violaine De Villers displays the other side, the setting, the interplay of the attitudes which they indulge in at will in a limited space.
